Why Maira decided to study hospitality

Our Japanese student Maira Kanai-Nasir is currently studying at Ecole Hôtelière Helvétique. She is taking the next step in her career and will be starting her internship with The Meydan Hotel soon.  With a bright future ahead of her, we thought this was the perfect time to sit down with her and learn what led her to where she is today…

Why did you decide to study hospitality?

I stumbled upon the world of hospitality only by chance at working in a restaurant whilst studying at university and fell in love with the industry. Understanding core concepts of being in the hospitality industry came naturally to me and I felt at home in that setting. I worked hard and found pleasure in working with and in the different section slowly getting to know how everything worked. I found it something I was really passionate and good at and decided to make hospitality my career.

What are you currently doing?

I am currently enrolled in the Food Services & Catering Management Program with Ecole Hôtelière Helvétique. As EHH is a Swiss institution and the top hsopitality school in Dubai all programs are inclusive of internships with prestigious companies. I have been selected for an internship with The Meydan Hotel which will be starting within a week.

” Hospitality requires you to be charismatic, diligent and articulate, Ecole Hôtelière Helvétique helps you build on these characteristics and polish them.”

What are your future plans?

At the moment I would like to make the best of my internship and studies to gradute with experience and valuable Swiss certification. In the near future I would like to progress to a managerial level within UAE or internationaly. My goal is to esablish a restaurant of my own with the knowledge and experience I gain through this program.

What advice would you give to anyone who is interested in hospitality?

I would suggest to anyone who is interested in hospitality to be ready to give up their weekends and holidays! If you really want to succeed in the industry and go up the ladder, you will need a great education. There are things you cannot simply learn from being in the industry, a blend of theory and practical is exactly what EHH teaches you.
