Corporate Skills – The Need of the Hour

EHH in association with Al Ghurair University concluded the first of its kind Corporate Skills Workshop. The course addressed the need to prepare students to ‘hit the ground running’ as they enter professional careers. In the corporate world today, it is the survival of the fittest, as companies compete for market share and dominance. This backdrop has increased the organizations’ focus and expectation from new comers. It is not only domain knowledge; new employees are also expected to produce results and be productive within a short duration. It is this expectation that is the drive for such courses, in attempting to ‘bridge the gap’ between new employees and their employers.

Corporate skills and mind-set can vary based on one’s career phase, here we are recommending the key traits and behaviors for ‘new entrants’ into the corporate world. Remember the word corporate is used loosely to befit small and medium enterprises and start-ups. The focus here is the change over from studentship to careers.

In recent times a host of discussions have mushroomed around millennials and how corporates indeed are to adjust around the entry and accommodation of this wave of thinker and hopefully doers. The key argument there would certainly weigh in the favor of the corporates – how you wonder? Well, in some quarters the discussions would be around the how the new thinking of the millennials would revolutionize the accepted norms of corporate management. Are the millennials really, the answer to changes being ushered in by AI and Blockchains? If so, what specific skills and attitudes should they harness or should have already as they make their entry into a fast-changing corporate world that is under tremendous pressure to stay competitive.

AI and Blockchains are forging ahead and fast tracking every aspect in the world of commerce and trade. The educational institutions have to be an early adaptor to this technology, while reengineering fundamentals to groom future generations into this technology. A tough call to achieve and one that will do without euphemism to playfulness tagged to millennials.

Interestingly 2018, this is the year when all the birth certificates issued in 2000 will face adulthood for the first time – of course. Here we go, the advent of generation Z and another nuance to decipher, or is it?

This was a trial course, addressing organizational-tactics, skills and the mind-set required to compete and excel in today’s corporate world. Nearly 80% of the participants strongly agreed with the content of the course. Ecole Hotelier Helvetique will be conducting more of such courses, in the near future.
